Untitled Wolverine Sequel could begin in January of 2016

Steve Spielberg is set to return to directing after a decade.
Steve Spielberg is set to direct the up coming feature, Ready Player One, in Vancouver - prepping in October and shooing in early 2016. Ernest Cline’s novel Ready Player One, is a feature being produces by Warner Bros., Amblin Entertainment and Village Roadshow. The screenplay has been written by Zak Penn (X-The Last Stand, Suspect Zero, Behind Enemy Lines, Pacific Rim 2.)

Vancouver Director Sharon McGowan's new documentary Bearded Ladies: the Photography of Rosamond Norbury will premiere on Tuesday August 18th at 8:45 PM at the Vancity Theatre.

The film is part of the Vancouver Queer Film Festival's Maple Smoked Cinema Spotlight program.

Reel West Editor Mark Leiren-Young was chosen one of 12 recipients of the BravoFACTUAL awards on June 24th, 2015.

Selected from 142 applications, a total of $562,541 was awarded to Canadian filmmakers for the production of short documentary films. The jury was anchored by guest juror, short film and documentary expert, and Hot Docs programmer, Angie Driscoll.

Mark's story, The Hundred Year Old Whale, deals with a 100-year-old orca called Granny.

Greg Wise and Gil Bellows in 3 Days in Havana

The rapprochement between the US and Cuba couldn't have come at a better time for the makers for the BC indie feature 3 Days in Havana.

Filmed in 2011 and 2012 in Vancouver and Havana, Cuba, the comedic thriller premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) in 2013 and was theatrically released in Canada in 2014 and in the US in early 2015.

Maybe you are one of those people who love 1970s punk rock, crave 1980s cinnamon coffee, and hate the sound of your spouse blending a smoothie at 5 AM? If so, you would fit right into the universe of Mitch & Dunc in Ross Munro's sophomore film A Legacy of Whining, a black comedy about two former high school friends who meet up for one disastrous night thirty years later.

It took several years of prep, and 36 shooting days, mostly nights, during the spring and summer of 2014, but Munro's $80K-indie is now ready to start the festival circuit.

Leo Award Winners of Violent

The independent BC-created, Norway-shot film Violent dominated this year's Leo Awards, held on June 6th, 13th and 14th, 2015. Writers Joseph Schweers and Josh Huculiak (key photo) took home a total of 4 Leo Awards for Violent on Sunday, June 14th, including Best Motion Picture, Best Direction, Best Screenwriting and Musical Score. The film, which swept all the major BC awards since VIFF, also won 4 Leo Awards for Cinematography, Picture Editing, Visual Effects, and Casting.
